Mylar Rescue Blanket
This reflective "space" type blanket is one of those loud, crinkly, disposable covers to be used in emergencies, and it does that job wonderfully. This blanket prevents heat-loss from radiation, which is how the majority of our body heat is lost. It allows hot pockets of air to form between you and the blanket. It does not do much to protect against conduction since it is so thin. It is tough, stretches a little, and it takes a considerable amount of force to rip it. However, once it is punctured, it will continue ripping fairly easily. When using this blanket, you should squat down and wrap it around you. If you have a sleeping pad and sleeping bag, line the insides of your sleeping bag with one of these and you'll be toasty in no time. For best results, use two blankets to cover yourself overhead and underfoot when either squatting or creating an emergency shelter.
