Accuwedge

The Accuwedge is a small piece of rubber that fits below the take down pin in all M-16 / AR-15 clones. The wiggle between the upper and lower is due to forging and machining tolerances and guarantees interchangeability. The Accuwedge reduces rattling, thereby preventing wear.

If the upper & lower receivers rattle every time the recoil energy is transferred. It is not unreasonable to assume that the upper and lower receiver take down pin holes are getting worn down from moving around against the take down pin. The pin is steel and the receivers are aluminum. Guess who loses the battle over time.

If you use one be sure to keep the takedown pins/holes lubricated and "squeeze" the upper and lower together before attempting to push the takedown pin in/out.

Occasionally you might not need an Accuwedge if everything lines up just right and there is no wiggle between the upper and lower. However, this is the exception and not the rule.
